Carrie Baker, Tyler Natof and Lindsey Nelson represented Mid Century Telephone Cooperative in Washington, D.C., during the annual Youth to Washington, D.C. event. The tour has been sponsored by the electric and telephone cooperatives of Illinois since the late 1950’s and is an introduction to our democratic form of government and cooperatives. While on the week long tour the students form a Chip & Pop Co-op, hire a manager and employees and elect a Board of Directors. This is Mid Century’s eleventh year sponsoring area youth.
The week was filled with exciting adventures, beginning with a stop in Gettysburg where they visited the Museum, Cyclorama and Civil War Battlefield. Throughout the week in the Nation’s Capital they met with Senator Dick Durbin and attended a luncheon at the Capitol Building, hosted by U.S. Congressman John Shimkus, where they toured the Capitol Building and met with Congresswoman Cheri Bustos. Carrie, Lindsey and Tyler had the opportunity to witness the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery, attend the Iwo Jima Parade and Pageant and a reception at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia. They also visited several historic sites including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, multiple Smithsonian Museums, Supreme Court, Washington National Cathedral, National Archives, Newseum, Ford Theatre, many War and U.S. Presidential Memorials, took a River Boat Cruise on the Potomac River and joined hundreds of other young leaders from across the country at an assembly, dinner and dance.
